初心

The Promise

I have an affinity with eggs for as long as I remember.

When I was one, an egg was the first thing I picked from a set of 12 items during 抓周 (a Hainanese practice for first birthday). 25 years later, I pinched a clay egg during my very first pottery class in my teacher's home studio. It remained sealed after glaze firing and all these years it has been sitting unassumingly in a corner of my studio.

For this exhibition 初心, I wanted to choose a form that would bring me back to my beginner's heart. The stubbornly stuck egg feels like an endeavour waiting to be "hatched". Symbolically it called for a time for revisitation and reinvention which I saw as an opportunity to gain fresh perspectives and disciplined mindset on processes that were deemed to be challenging and tedious.

Using the egg form as a canvas for narratives, I delved into the ceramics alchemy, exploring different materials and developing my own glazes. My perception as an artist has shifted and renewed during this introspective journey.

The collection of this journey is titled as "Ordiri". They are of stoneware material, fired in the electric kiln to 1250 degrees celsius.

The Promise Exhibition was at AC43 Gallery from 9 to 14 June 2022.

Imprinted Memories ~ 烙印

If the walls of an old house could speak what would they say? As we tear and peel back the layers of paint, wall papers and fixtures on the walls what would we find?

This was the initial idea behind imprinted memories. Old houses bring us feelings of nostalgia because their walls hold the memories of the generations who lived there. The indents of their day to day, the colours of their yester years.

Fabric Souk ~ 店布

Year 2008, in a fabric souk in Kuwait, I was introduced to the world of Japanese fabric, 100% cotton and totally colourful. I picked up sewing and wondered into the world of needlework.
